Botl
| Title: | Botl |
| Notes: |
Botl This is based on a sample of two (empty...) champagne bottles being bounced together. I did this after hearing Monolake's new album which makes nice use of a bottle-bouncing sound. I have also used a Moog theremin and a Prophet 8 synthesizer on the track. The bottle samples run through a max/msp patch I made for this track, which I called "multipass" in honour of The Fifth Element. Buy a lossless-audio version of Botl on Bandcamp (name your price!) |

Creak
| Title: | Creak |
| Notes: |
Creak is based mainly on a sample of a door creaking. Whatsoever the door provides entry to or exit from is not important; what is important, is that the door makes a wonderful creaking sound when you open (or indeed, close) it. Buy a lossless-audio version of Creak on Bandcamp (name your price!) |

Klaim
| Title: | Klaim |
| Notes: |
The full name of this track is Klaim and its Stochastic Semantics. That is the name of a paper that I discovered while searching for a replacement component for one of my synthesizers. I don't fully understand the implications of the paper but it's a cool title. The track uses a sample of Tim Brickel on drums, although it's processed through a Max patch I made that varies the playback speed according to an envelope that changes over time. I also wanted to only use one note in this track, although there are many pitches. The note is B flat. Buy a lossless-audio version of Klaim on Bandcamp (name your price!) |

Axiom
| Title: | Axiom |
| Notes: |
I programmed a kind of Euclidean rhythm step sequencer in Max, and this is the first track I have tried to use it on (the percussive sounds). The other music on the track is some 12-note things... Buy a lossless-audio version of Axiom on Bandcamp (name your price!) |

Voorwerp
| Title: | Voorwerp |
| Notes: |
"Hanny's Voorwerp" is an astronomical object of unknown nature - a bright blob near the spiral galaxy IC2497 in the constellation of Leo Minor. It was discovered in 2007 by the Dutch schoolteacher Hanny van Arkel while she was participating as an amateur astronomer in the Galaxy Zoo project. The music is based on 12-tone serial stuff ... and I also wanted to experiment with using 3 external synths at once in Ableton. Hence it is quite a rich texture. Extinct
| Title: | Extinct |
| Notes: |
The ambience is largely constructed from a sample of a not-extinct blackbird, and processed through a granular synthesis engine. But all our "common" birds are in decline as their habitat is destroyed. Will they too go the way of the Dodo? Icteria
| Title: | Icteria |
| Notes: |
This track is partly based on a sample from a "rare bird alert" telephone answering service. The caller had just spotted a yellow-breasted chat (Icteria virens). Another sample is a field recording of birdsong. Both of these samples have been through a granulator. Special K #1
| Title: | Contrá |
| Notes: |
The chanting is Sí se puede, a civil rights slogan which translates to "yes we can", dating from the 1970s. It was adopted by Barack Obama in 2004. [info]. The speech is Che Guevara in 1965, on the subject of imperialism. This was his last public appearance. |

| Title: | Numbers Station |
| Notes: | "Numbers stations" are mysterious radio stations, typically found on short wavelengths, on which voices repeat sequences of apparently nonsensical numbers. These stations are reputed to originate from foreign embassies and relay encrypted information to spies. The prominent sample in this track is from a KGB broadcast in German. |

| Title: | HVS-CHK |
| Notes: |
"HVS-CHK" is the pattern of letters spelt out in morse code throughout this track. A HVS or "hypervelocity star" [info] is a star that has been flung (perhaps by a black hole, or perhaps by an alien civilization...) at a velocity so great that they are able to escape the gravitational pull of their galaxy. While rare, 16 HVS have been discovered careening about the cosmos by astronomers. |

| Title: | Fly Me To The Moon |
| Notes: |
The samples are obviously from the 1960s moon-shot recordings by NASA, and the piano music is obviously the Bart Howard standard of 1954. But the music is about something else entirely. |
